LEED Flooring
As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, the demand for “green” flooring products continues to increase! The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) initiative is driving this demand. LEED has certification levels for new construction, commercial interiors and existing buildings. Floor coverings play an important role in all of these categories. There are many products that we sell and install that are LEED eligible.
The LEED eligibility can come from many sources: carpet fibers made from recycled pop bottles (polyester fiber), carpet fibers made from starch-based agricultural waste products (polylactic acids), carpet backings made from recovered automotive windshields (polyvinyl butyls). The sources of recycled content and LEED-eligible flooring products are increasing daily.
However, all these green flooring products have appearance and performance tradeoffs compared to their virgin product counterparts. You need someone who actually has installed all of these LEED flooring products and someone who has witnessed first hand their appearance and performance over time. We at Jack Laurie have done so. We are at the cutting edge of all LEED-eligible floor coverings. In fact, we have installed several flooring projects that have received the platinum rating from the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED rating system.
